Northwire Celebrates Bring Your Child to Work Day

One way Northwire inspires the next generation to the custom cable manufacturing world is by hosting Bring Your Child to Work Day open to employee sons and daughters, ages 8-18.

The day was filled with a manufacturing tour with Production Manager Kevin Rector. Kids saw first-hand how customized cable and wire is made through different phases of the production floor including technical extruding, cabling, braiding, jacketing, retractile coil cording, and cable assembling.

Then kids met members of each office department such as Human Resources, Accounting/Finance, Customer Care, Outside Sales, Cable Design, Research and Development, Purchasing, Scheduling, and IT. Kids learned what each department does and how it supports the overall company goals.

It was a great summer day for the kids to take a break and enjoy lunch with imaginative cable games: Jumper Cable and Tug-of-War with cable.

Finally, kids toured the Quality Lab where they learned about the steps Northwire performs to ensure customer satisfaction. Quality Lab tests include flex testing and color matching.

In a full day, kids gained a bigger picture about the team of people and variety of careers it takes to produce custom cable; discovered all the unique functionality beneath the cable jacket; and learned that it takes streamlined processes and technical science to develop custom interconnectivity solutions at Northwire. Many kids even saw their parent proudly working in their trade!

Perhaps Bring Your Child to Work Day intrigued them enough to consider a manufacturing career when that time arrives.
