The diameter (in mm) of the conductor for a known AWG value can be calculated by using this formula:

  • D = 25.4 (.005 x 92(36-AWG)/39)

As an example, to find out the diameter of a wire with an AWG value of 14:

  • 36 - 14 = 22
  • 22/39 = 0.5641
  • 92 (0.5641) = 12.82
  • .005 x 12.82 = 0.0641 (which is the diameter in inches)
  • 25.4 x 0.0641 = 1.63mm diameter
