Ask an Expert

Q. How do you perform flexibility tests?

A. There are different standards for testing for flexibility. We look at the specific application. If there is not a defined standard, then we will use the application to drive the test. For instance, if it is going to be in a bend, twist and flex operation then we will design the test protocol around the application that the cable is being designed for. They are all different. The only type of test that is common is the C track. The cable will move in a C application and require a lower-durometer material or even materials such as rubbers because of the abrasion that it sees in a C track motion.

Q. What new material research are you excited about that we might see in the next 5 to 10 years for both conductors and insulation materials? Is nanotechnology on the horizon?

A. Yes, nanotechnology is on the horizon for wire and cable materials. Especially in the use of nano tubes used in semi-conductive material applications. Also, in the bio material arena, there is very promising material research for both insulation and jacketing. The low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) new technologies for flame retardants and additives are coming online every day, so that we can expand the horizon of these materials. As a lot of us know, LSZH was basically developed for the European wire and cable market, especially for buildings and mass transit. When a fire occurred, the product burned clean and did not give off corrosive gases. They are looking at new materials that will retard the flame more quickly in the LSZH arena. That is very exciting, especially in the North American market in which flame extinguishing is very important.
