  Tapes, Binders and Serves

Tapes, binders, and serves hold core assemblies together and isolate cable components from one another.

Tapes are commonly made of clear or opaque polyester and polypropylene. They hold cable cores together, isolate shields from core assemblies, and shielded core assemblies from cable jackets.

Binders hold large core assemblies, especially those with multiple components and/or long lay lengths, together.

Serves, typically paper or polyester/polypropylene tapes, isolate shielded or unshielded core assemblies from jacket materials, allowing the jacket to be easily removed.

Fillers

Fillers are used to:

  • Fill voids in the cable core to produce a firm and round assembly, and/or
  • Provide additional axial strength to meet breaking strength requirements.

Filler materials are available in many forms and materials. The most common fillers are:

Type Application
Fibrillated Polypropylene Most frequently used core filler because of its flexibility, ability to be formed into place, and low cost. Flame resistant versions are available
Paper

Used most often in flexible power cord. Available in flame and moisture resistant versions.

Solid Made of plastics such as PVC, polyethylene, or nylon, these fillers are available in a variety of sizes making them suitable to fill large interstices and interstices between core components of differing sizes, and as additional insulation in low leakage cables.
